A Little Piece of Bali Diving History: USS Liberty Wreck

Learn about USS Liberty before you embark on your Bali Diving Trips!

The USAT Liberty, originally built in 1918 in New Jersey, USA, was a United States Army cargo ship that served during both World War I and World War II. Measuring 120 meters in length, the ship played a vital role in transporting goods such as horses and general cargo during its service. However, its journey took a dramatic turn during World War II.

How the USS Liberty Became a Wreck?

In 1942, the USAT Liberty, carrying rubber and railway parts, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine near the Lombok Strait.

Heavily damaged, it was towed toward Singaraja, Bali, but began taking on water.

To prevent sinking, it was beached on Tulamben’s rocky shore.

In 1963, Mount Agung’s eruption caused tremors that pushed the ship into the sea.

The Liberty broke apart and now rests underwater at depths of 3 to 30 meters.

Today, the USAT Liberty wreck is one of Bali's most famous dive sites and among the most accessible wreck dives in the world. Located just 25 meters from Tulamben’s coastline, it is easily reachable for divers and snorkelers alike.

Diving in Bali is possible all year round, but chances to see Mola Mola is higher around July to October.

The best time for diving in Bali is from March to November, during the dry season, when the water visibility is excellent and conditions are mostly favorable.

Wet Season is during the months of December to February, visibility underwater drops to about 10 - 20m during this period. However, currents and waves are manageable.
